The rapid prototyping module includes both rapid prototyping and 3D digitizing facilities. Rapid prototyping enables the production of physical models from digital ones, whereas 3D digitizing accomplishes the opposite. Both techniques can be used in the exploration of design and building solutions that given their formal complexity are difficult to study using traditional methods.

The rapid prototyping and 3d digitizing solutions available are those considered appropriate for a teaching environment for being cleaner, for not demanding special security measures, and for possessing easy maintenance. The available tools include a laser cutter, a blade cutter, an FDM machine, and a milling machine. These can be complemented by solutions that exist in other IST laboratories, namely in the Advanced Production Technologies Lab at the Mechanical Engineering Department.
