Description

FDM is the acronym of the phrase in English fused deposition modeling, which means molding by deposition of molten material. This process is an additive process in which a strand of plastic is heated to melt, the head of the machine then moves on the xy plane and deposits the molten material at a given point. The molten material solidifies when it comes into contact with air. Once all the material has been deposited, the plate of the machine where the model is being built moves down in the Z axis thereby beginning the making of the next layer of the model. The model is thus built layer by layer. To prevent cantilevered parts of the model to fall when they are deposited and have not hardened yet, plastic supports are built following a similar process but in a more brittle material. Once the model is completed, the supports are broken and removed with the help of tools. To eliminate the support that cannot be removed by this process, the model is immersed in a tank and cleaned using ultrasounds.
