Description
Português The Bioclimatic Architecture Laboratory (LAB) is dedicated to the study of the performance of buildings both individually and in the urban context. The LAB provides the necessary framework to support the teaching of the fundamentals of sustainable design and development of rigorous scientific studies on the subject. The three study areas considered in the lab are: architectural design of low energy consumption, including lighting, heating, cooling and ventilation, the study of indoor environments that are comfortable, healthy and promoting wellness, and the space-use analysis, including environmental performance. The studies cover both the analysis of projects using computer simulations and physical models or analysis of existing buildings through the post-occupation. The infrastructure to support these studies includes: simulation software (thermal, lighting, CFD, acoustic); equipment to test physical models (heliodeon) and instruments to perform field work and measurements on existing buildings (data loggers, Cart), evaluate the quality of construction and study (infra-red cameras) and usage patterns post-occupation (time lapse video). Finally, this lab will have an innovative role in exploiting the emerging area of study related to the use of adaptive processes in the creation of architectural forms. The adaptation to the external environment in terms of energy consumption, air flows, and natural lighting are among the most important forces to consider the generation of architectural forms by computational means based on genetic algorithms and other artificial intelligence techniques.
